Bombay High Court's New Video Conferencing Rules: A Step Toward Judicial Modernization
The Bombay High Court has introduced the “High Court of Bombay Rules for Video Conferencing for Courts 2022,” effective December 29, to modernize judicial proceedings across Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories. Published on December 19, these rules aim to enhance efficiency and inclusivity in courts, including Family, Labour, Industrial Courts, and various tribunals, while ensuring procedural integrity. Video conferencing is now a formally recognized mode of judicial proceedings, with stringent identity verification and security measures prohibiting unauthorized recordings. Designated coordinators will manage technical arrangements to ensure smooth, disruption-free hearings.
The framework accommodates special cases, such as witnesses abroad or in custody, facilitating secure video testimonies. Requests for video conferencing must follow a prescribed format, with documents shared electronically beforehand. The rules cover key functions under the crpc.
