What OCI Holders Should Remember before Appearing in NEET?

It’s not essential that only India’s aspirants take route to the US, UK or any other foreign country for getting admission in any prestigious college. There are certain factors, like affordable quality education, that pull the non-residents, overseas citizens and persons of Indian origin to the nation. NEET or National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test is one of those tests that help to access quality education in medical.

Let’s walk down to catch more about it.

What is NEET?

As foretold, NEET stands for National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for taking admission in MBBS/BDS course or MD/MS (medical) course. This test is acceptable all over India as it is a common admission test. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts it. By replacing All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) that every state used to conduct separately before 2013 for the same reasons, this test became prevalent. However, it was proposed in 2013 but came in practice since 2016. It’s pretty much similar to IIT/JEE exam for admission in engineering.

NEET Quota

India comprises of various states. Each state conducts its own PMT exam. But appearance in NEET would be deemed in every state. Therefore, each state conducts it. The exam-regulating entity called CBSE offers quota of seats in various categories.

· 15% quota in all government universities:

The students appeared successfully in NEET shall be eligible to claim 15% seats of the government medical and dental colleges. It is based on national basis.

· 85% quota in all private & govt. universities:

Like 15% quota, 85% quota in the private and government colleges of the states would be filled by observing NEET marks. The score achieved in this exam shall be considered while conducting counseling for admission.

Earlier, the quota was not meant for OCIs/PIOs/ NRIs. But since 2017-18, such foreign students shall be eligible to claim one out of 15% of all India quota seats. For example, the state government issued a notice on April18, 2017 that affirms foreign students’ admission in 15% institutional or management quota in the private medical college.

Despite several counter-attacks on its set up, this exam is still going on successfully. The Supreme Court has passed order to green signal its conduction. Now, those who apply for OCI card or PIO card would be able to appear in this exam like NRIs.  But they have to bear in mind these points:

1. Identity proof: They must have valid Aadhaar card as their identity proof. It has been made compulsory for all natives of India. But yes, there are a few exceptions. The citizens of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir are barred from this mandate.

In case, they don’t have this card, the passport would be accepted as the authentic ID proof. The applicant must mention his/her passport number on the application form. And later also, they must take the same along while appearing in the exam.

2. 15% institutional/management quota in private colleges: As told above, the aspirants can utilize the opportunity of claiming seats as per quota. But OCIs and PIOs shall be eligible to claim one out of 15% seats for which they have to sit in the NEET exams.

As far as the state’s reservation quot a is concerned, state would be a sole authority to provide quota or not. Kashmir government rejects entertaining any such request for quota. On the other hand, Maharashtra government has nodded to provide quota seats for admission in private or government medical colleges.

3. NEET mandatory for admission in medical: Taking admission before 2016 in Indian medical college was based on the scores for non-residents, person of Indian origin and overseas citizens. But with the interception of the Supreme Court, the foreign residents have to compete with the indigenous aspirants in the NEET exam. They can’t skip it for getting admission as stated in the old law books.

4. Choose the city for exam wisely: it would be a wise idea to take exam in the state wherein maximum numbers of sears are offered. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the two main venues which maximize seat offering to take admission in medical college post entrance exam successfully. CBSE has validated around 80 cities of India to conduct this exam. While filling the form, the foreign students can mark three centers in a city for participating.
